UNITY THROUGH THE ARTS : Personal Experience as Art Practice
at Dutchess Community College
Saturday, May 3, 2025 - 9 am-4pm
6 CTLE credits
“Our job .... Is to act as splicers, fusing personal experience with durable fundamentals from the past.” — Brian Rutenberg, CLEAR SEEING PLACE, Studio Visits, 2016
As classroom educator/artists, we create many foundational experiences for our students, including a toolbox of elements and principles. This visual language is essential for critical thinking processes. It helps them identify and share connections within the arts, as well as across other disciplines.
Social/Emotional Learning is a natural extension of this creative environment, and from here students can begin to incorporate personal experiences and ideas. They will begin to recognize the value of free expression and develop the confidence to share this process within their communities.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
We are excited to welcome Keynote Speaker Mindell Dubansky, a book conservator, librarian, author, and artist. She is the Museum Librarian for Preservation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Thomas J. Watson Library.
She has authored several monographs on book and paper arts. Pattern and Flow: A Golden Age of American Decorated Paper (2023), is the book and topic she will be presenting at the NYSATA Region 7 Symposium 2025. A perfect example of our theme, Unity through the Arts: Personal Experience as Art Practice, and will include an exploration of beautifully crafted decorative papers, tools, styles and sketchbooks of decorative paper artists from the past 50 years.
